About Qatar Expo 2023:
"Green Desert, Better Environment":
Once upon a time, greening the desert was a challenge. Nowadays a green desert is possible.
To achieve it and maintain it is an important and increasingly urgent topic, because it can be an answer to global water, energy, and food scarcity problems.
Techniques that enable the sustainable cultivation of trees and crops in arid lands play an important role in reversing desertification problems evident around the world.
The Green Desert ideal has cultural, educational, economic, social and scientific aspects, combining traditional agricultural practices with modern and alternative techniques like hydroponics, permaculture and vermiculture, all in a sustainable manner.
The greening of deserts is a sustainable project for irrigation and forestation of dry areas or regions near water sources like lakes, rivers, seas or oceans.
Also, we need to promote the benefits of clean technologies like irrigation with natural water sources and renewable energy supplies.
The Green Desert ideal cannot be attained without involving people, gaining social support and realising cultural change. Without a change in the mindset of the people and their perspectives on the future, the sustainability of any endeavour would not be possible.
Thus, the Green Desert concept entails modern agriculture based on technology and innovation, supported by enhanced environmental awareness, in order to attain sustainability.
Mankind has changed the balance of planet earth by living beyond its means.
Global warming is one of today’s most acute problems, affecting every human being irrespective of age, gender, wealth or nationality.
Since the age of industrialisation, the natural balance has changed drastically until now it is beyond affordable limits.
A major factor of today’s global warming is the consumption of fossil fuels, causing an increase in carbon dioxide (CO2), methane and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
These hydrocarbons heat up the planet due to the greenhouse effect, triggering the interaction between Earth’s atmosphere and incoming radiation from the sun.
Global warming is forecast to have devastating consequences not only for the climate of our planet but also for all living beings. It is expected to have dire consequences for planet earth, with climate change, loss of biodiversity and desertification.
Desertification is the process of land degradation in arid, semi-arid and sub-humid areas due to various factors including climatic variations and human activities.
Desertification occurs when land originally of another type of biome turns into a desert biome due to factors such as overgrazing, urbanisation, climate change, over-drafting of groundwater, deforestation, natural disasters and tillage practices. This transformation of biome results in persistent degradation of dryland and fragile ecosystems and loss of biodiversity.
One third of the world’s land surface is threatened by desertification.
Across the world it affects the livelihoods of millions of people who depend on the benefits of ecosystems that drylands provide.
The amount of land threatened by desertification increases by 12 million hectares each year, making it a global problem. As the land becomes more arid, it can no longer support the number of people it did in the past.
As a result, massive numbers of rural people migrate to urban areas, causing not only an environmental problem but also an economic challenge.
This Year's Theme for the Doha Expo 2023:
Expo 2023 Doha is held under the theme "Green Desert, Better Environment" and aims to promote sustainable innovations and combat desertification.
It will inspire visitors to participate in the transformation within four main topics:
Modern Agriculture, Technology and Innovation, Environmental Awareness, Sustainability.
The theme has been founded to inspire the international community to explore and adopt innovative desertification mitigation solutions.
Spanning 1.7 million square meters, the event takes place in the scenic Al Bidda Park, one of the biggest parks in Doha, offering breathtaking views of the Arabian Gulf.
Visitors can look forward to beautiful gardens, thought-provoking talks, conferences, art, and cuisine, making it an unforgettable experience.
As a collaboration between the Bureau International Des Expositions (BIE) and the International Association for Horticultural Producers (AIPH), Expo Doha 2023 will attract visitors locally and internationally, pavilions from almost 80 countries, NGOs (Non-Governmental Organisations), and representatives.
It is one of the largest international events of the year:
Expo 2023 Doha began on 02.10.2023 and will run for an impressive 179 days of celebrations, concluding on 28.03.2024.
The event aims to attract over 3 million visitors, offering attendees the opportunity to explore exquisitely landscaped gardens and experience cultures from around the world.
2023 International Horticultural Exposition or Expo 2023 is an International Horticultural Expo to be hosted by Doha, Qatar.
Spanning 1.7 million square meters, the event was originally scheduled to be held from 14.10.2021 to 17.03.2022, but it was rescheduled to 2023 due to the Wuhan Virus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) general assembly in Paris formally recognised it on 22.11.2018 as an International Horticultural Exhibition.
Goals:
The theme of EXPO 2023 Doha, Qatar is “Green Desert, Better Environment”.
Encouraging, inspiring, and educating people about cutting-edge methods to lessen desertification is the aim. The Exhibition is planned to provide a global forum for professionals, non-governmental organizations, decision makers, and participants to discuss the global issue of "Desertification".
It is quite difficult to have an international horticulture expo in Doha, which is why it is the ideal place to talk about desertification. Action on global issues must be taken globally.
In addition to bringing the world together to find answers to the problem of desertification, EXPO 2023 Doha, Qatar will play a significant role in securing a sustainable future.
The following goals characterise Expo 2023 Doha, Qatar, which is in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030:
• To hold the first-ever horticultural show in a desert climate.
• To designate Qatar as the center of this concept in order to create a showcase for "The Green City" throughout the Middle East.
• Promote innovative horticulture that takes into account Qatar's soils, water, and climate.
• To highlight Expo 2023 in Doha, Qatar as a driver of foreign direct investment and commercial prospects in Qatar.
• Draw attention to the connections between sport, the environment, and people's health and well being.
• To provide creative solutions that will enable humanity to stop desertification sooner rather than later;
• To create beneficial environmental products that will serve as a legacy for future generations.
Qatar National Vision 2030:
In alignment with the Qatar National Vision 2030, a strategic blueprint designed to propel Qatar towards achieving sustainable development and becoming a more advanced society by 2030, this particular edition serves as a catalyst for transformative initiatives.
It aims to foster global awareness and encourage individual engagement in order to support the goals outlined in the vision.
Hosting this gathering is a project that aligns harmoniously with the concurrent endeavors of national sustainability projects.
It is a collaborative initiative that seeks to promote and support the principles of sustainability on a national scale. By bringing together stakeholders from various sectors, this Expo aims to foster dialogue, exchange knowledge, and develop innovative solutions to address pressing environmental challenges.
The event serves as a platform for sharing best practices, showcasing successful initiatives, and inspiring collective action towards a more sustainable future. Through its inclusive and participatory approach, this project contributes to the broader national sustainability agenda and reinforces the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving long-term environmental goals.
