Paris 2024 Olympic Games:
The Monnaie de Paris has released the third series of hexagonal-shaped Gold and Silver Commemorative Coins marking the XXXIII Olympiad scheduled to be hosted in the city of Paris in 2024.
Having previously hosted in 1900 and 1924, Paris will become only the second city to host the Summer Olympic Games three times after London in 1908, 1948, and 2012.
The Games are scheduled to take place from the 26.07.2024 to the 11.08.2024, with Paris acting as the main host city together with 16 additional cities spread across Metropolitan France, including the remote French Overseas Territory (FOT) in the South Pacific of Tahiti as a sub-site.
The coins highlight this international competition through a collection of coin designs highlighting sport, its values, the athletes and, the country’s heritage as host.
The Olympic and Paralympic spirit is being celebrated with the themes and motifs over a four-year series concluding in 2024.
The build-up to the Paris Summer Games - 2024:
On the occasion of the 2024 Paris Summer Games, Monnaie de Paris will focus on this renowned international competition through a Gold and Silver Coin collection highlighting sport, its values, the athletes and also French heritage.
Olympism and Paralympism are being celebrated on these products, minted by the Monnaie de Paris (The Paris Mint).
Following the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 (on account of the outbreak of the Chinese Wuhan Virus also known as Covid-19), the year 2021 officially marked the start of the countdown to the Paris Games.
It was the handing over of the Olympic flag during the closing ceremony of the Games that marked the start of a new era of "Games à la Française".
This torch transfer will also be highlighted in this collection.
The Coins:
After "Marianne" (2021) and the "Genie" (2022), this coin presented "La Semeuse" ("The Sower") trying out the sport of boxing which was the theme of the 10€ silver coin - "Hexagonal Semeuse" ("Six-sided Agriculture Sower Coin") and of the 2€ Commemorative Coins issued, the final Coins in the Series feature "Hercules" and the "Notre Dame" - all designs through French Numismatic Figures.
The remaining three designs were released over the next three years concluding with the final design in 2024.
These designs were also featured on Proof-quality (P) and Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) €2 commemoratives.
The figures highlighted in the series were:
- the allegorical national figure of a sprinting Marianne (2021),
- the winged male figure “Genie de la Liberte” with discus which is found atop the Column of July monument located at the Place de la Bastille (2022) and a
- sports-themed version of “the Sower,” who first featured on French silver circulation coinage from 1897 (2023).
The Fourth and Final Coin in the Series:
A new set of Coins has now been released continuing the series of Coin issues in 2024 featuring the 2024 Olympics & Paralympics:

For the last design in the series, Hercules, a French numismatic figure wearing the skin of the Nemean lion, is featured on the Reverse.
He is shown in the stance of a wrestler as he confronts a gargoyle from Notre Dame in Paris.
Gargoyles have traditionally been regarded as protectors from evil spirits at the Notre Dame Cathedral, shown in the background, and is considered one of the most emblematic monuments of Paris.
To the upper left of the primary design are the initials "RF" representing “REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE” with the official Olympic logo for the Paris Olympic Summer Games placed to the lower left.
The year of release, "2024" is found just to the upper right shown vertically.
The Obverse of the Coins, which is also common to the four-year series, features two interlocking hexagons serving as a frame for the text "REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE" and the Coins’ denomination of "EURO 250" (Gold) or "EURO 10" (Silver) along with a wreath of maple and olive branches.
- The commemorative Obverse design is also available on the €2 commemorative coins struck in both Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated versions.
At the centre right periphery is the mint mark of the Monnaie de Paris - a Cornucopia ("The Horn of Plenty", with coins falling out of the Horn).
