Following a period of intensive creativity, the Austrian Mint engravers have come up with the celestial images that feature on the 12 coins in our new series. With a strictly limited mintage and in the highest possible minting quality, the coins both make for perfect gifts and unique additions to your coin collection.
The Zodiac Signs of Western Astrology:
The Western Astrological signs of the Zodiac go back to the Babylonian tradition of some 3,000 years ago, which identified patterns in the sky to determine the periods for sowing and harvesting crops.
In ancient Greece, the area of the sky that the sun appears to "pass through" when seen from earth was divided into 12 sections that corresponded to the months of the year. In Europe, the view prevailed that these 12 sections represented certain constellations that formed the basis of the western signs of the zodiac.
Up until the seventeenth century, there was no question that astrology was science. Astronomers such as Johannes Kepler and Galileo Galilei collected data on the position of the stars and planets and made predictions based on this. Whether as talismans or part of a family collection of zodiac signs, the coins in this series are designed to be lucky tokens for you and your loved ones.
The Coins and the Year - issue dates will be as under:
2025 Capricorn
2026 Taurus
2026 Leo
2026 Sagittarius
2027 Pisces
2027 Cancer
2027 Scorpio
2028 Aries
2028 Gemini
2028 Aquarius
2029 Libra
2029 Virgo
Each Coin Comes with a Special Gemstone:
Each zodiac sign has a gemstone that supports and balances its qualities. Capricorn finds harmony in rose quartz, while Taurus gains inner peace from amber.
Leo is strengthened by rock crystal, and Sagittarius finds clarity and intuition in sodalite.
Pisces benefit from the protective bloodstone or haematite, and Cancer is supported by the calming amazonite.
For Scorpio, fiery carnelian is a stone of passion, while Aries finds warmth of heart in rhodochrosite. Gemini thrive with citrine, which brings creativity and joy.
Aquarius and Libra are accompanied by chalcedony and aventurine, which foster serenity and harmony. Finally, Virgo gains inner calm with amethyst.
These stones are often cherished as personal companions, believed to enhance the energies of the zodiac signs.
The Third Coin in the Series is the Leo Sign:
The third coin in the unique "In the Stars Coin Series" combines the zodiac sign Leo and the Rock Crystal, which work together to help create harmony both with yourself and others.
Fire/Zodiac Sign - Leo:
Running from 23 July to 23 August and ruled by the Sun, Leo is a fire sign associated with passion and courage.
It is for this reason that in physical astrology the sign is connected with the heart and spine.
In the modern psychological interpretation of the zodiac, those born under Leo are characterised as being gregarious, confident, proud and fond of being the centre of attention.
While these (leonine) qualities can sometimes lead them to dominate those around them, they can just as well encourage extreme generosity and friendliness.
In other words, Leos have a big heart.
Gemstone: Rock crystal:
With its transparent and icy appearance, rock crystal is the most emblematic member of the quartz family.
Found in the Alps in large quantities, the purity of rock crystal led it to become representative of the divine and the purity of the soul in Europe during the Baroque period.
Rock crystal has also been used in spiritual practices, where it is believed to have both healing and protective properties, not least as it is thought to bring about calm, clarity and even enlightenment.
Coin Design:
A heartfelt gift for anyone born under the sign of Leo, the third "In the Stars" Coin inspires both vigour and clearness of mind by pairing the intensity of the zodiac sign Leo with the clarity and healing properties of the gemstone rock crystal.
The Reverse of the 20 Euro Coin
At the centre of the coin’s reverse a lion imperiously stares straight ahead, its magnificent mane flowing outwards on all sides and merging with the portrait’s border, which is formed of stars.
With this lucky coin, the third of 12 in the series, you are telling the recipient: “Your future is not just written in the stars – I will help you find your way. You are not alone.”
The Obverse of the 20 Euro Coin
The Leo Coin features a ring naming all 12 signs of the zodiac and their symbols, bordered by the stars of the night sky.
The symbol for Leo adorns the centre in large letters.
At the edge of the circle shines a smooth, glass-like circle of rock crystal.
