During our stay in Mumbai (1999-2004), we had gone for several Heritage Walks in the Western Naval Indian Navy Headquarters of INS Angre, where we saw a Naval Museum, a Submarine, INS Vikrant, after it was decommissioned etc. 

During the walks at INS Angre, the tour officials take you to the ramparts of the sea facing walls, where we were treated to 17-foot long cannon, which were designed to fire shots upto a range of 1.00 mile, which kept pirate ships at bay.

The HMS Nymph was one such escort ship for protecting the merchant convoys.

The Obverse and Reverse of the $1 (One Dollar) Virenium Coin featured against a background image of the "HMS NYMPH" at full mast.

The Treasury of the British Virgin Islands has released on  10.03.2022, the fifth coin in their current collector’s series entitled “Tall Ships,” featuring many of the ships that during their lifetime were connected to the British Virgin Islands.

 The latest coin in the collection features the Royal Navy ship "HMS Nymph", a 14-gun swan-class sloop of the British Royal Navy. 

Commissioned in 05/1778 under Commander William Denne, she served in the English Channel under Commander John Blankett in 01/1779. 

The Nymph then sailed for the East Indies on 08.03.1779 to join Vice-Admiral Edward Hughes’ East India fleet. 

In this capacity, her role was to protect English interests and island inhabitants from French and American privateers. Her duties/role also included protecting interests in Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras, as well as, serving as an escort to East India merchant convoys. 

In 01/1780 she came under Commander William Stevens and she remained in the East Indies until 1782, during which time Commander John Sutton took over. 

HMS Nymph returned to Britain later in the year and was refitted and re-coppered at Plymouth between August and October 1782. 

Commander Richard Hill then took command, and Nymph sailed for the Leeward Islands on 05.12.1782 to join Admiral Hugh Pigot and Rear-Admiral Richard Hughes, of the Lesser Antilles squadron. 

While at Tortola, in the British Virgin Islands, a fire broke out on 28.06.1783. The crew abandoned the ship and she burnt out and sank in Road Town's harbour, with the loss of three men. 

In 02/1969, dredging in Road Town harbour revealed the remains of the "Nymph". Artefacts were removed, but no archaeological survey or site excavation was conducted. The location of the wreck was subsequently lost for many years and remains a mystery.

The Coin:

The $1 coins have been minted by the Pobjoy Mint at their facilities in Surrey, England, on behalf of the treasury of the British Virgin Islands. 

Struck in virenium, this is Pobjoy Mint’s patented base metal alloy of light golden colour in appearance comprised of 81% copper, 10% zinc, and 9% nickel. 

On the Reverse of the $1 (One Dollar) Coin features an artist’s depiction of the ship before it sank. The text "HMS NYMPH" is placed just under the primary design with the denomination $1 seen in the upper-right half. 

The Obverse of the $1 (One Dollar) Coin features an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II created by the Pobjoy Mint which is an exclusive design. The year of issue "2022" appears on this face.
