National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR):

National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) is India’s premier R&D institution responsible for the country’s research activities in the Polar and Southern Ocean realms. 

The mandate of NCPOR is multi-dimensional:

-    -   Leadership role in niche areas of scientific research in the domain of polar and ocean sciences. 

-     -  Lead role in the geoscientific surveys of the country’s EEZ and its extended continental shelf beyond 200M, deep-sea drilling in the Arabian Sea basin through the IODP, exploration for ocean non-living resources such as the gas hydrates and multi-metal sulphides in mid-ocean ridges. 

-     -  Facilitatory role in the scientific research activities being undertaken by several national institutions and organizations in Antarctica, the Arctic and in the Indian Ocean sector of the Southern Ocean. 

-      - Management role in implementing all scientific and logistics activities related to the Annual Indian Expeditions to the Antarctic, Arctic and Southern Ocean. 

-    -   Management and upkeep of the Indian Antarctic Research Bases “Maitri” and “Bharati”, and the Indian Arctic base “Himadri” 

-      - Management of the Ministry’s research vessel ORV Sagar Kanya as well as the other research vessels chartered by the Ministry 

-      - Polar and Ocean Sciences 

-      - Geoscientific surveys 

-      - Extended continental shelf 

-     -  Deep sea drilling in the Arabian Sea 

-      - Gas hydrate 

-      - Multi-metal sulphide 

-      - Annual Scientfic Expeditions

TThe Special Cover released in Bhartiya Dak/India Post:

The Front of the Special Cover (SC)

On the Front, at top left is the title "Silver Jubilee of NCPOR 2000-2025".

Below that is an image of a Polar Research Station with Pebguins and a polar bear.

At top right is affixed a 500 Paise (or Rs.5/-) postage stamp issued on the occasion of the 46th ANTSRCTIC TREATY CONSULTATIVE MEETING - 28-30 MAY 2024".

The Special Cancellation Stamp is of SADA Post Office of Maharashtra Postal Circle and shows the logo of the Silver Jubilee which reads "25 Years of Excellence". The cancellation is dated "05.04.2025".


The Back of the Envelope gives the following description:
"The National Centre for Polar and Ocean research (NCPOR), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), leads India's polar and ocean research.NCPOR was dedicated to the nation on April 5, 2000.

NCPOR manages India's research stations - Maitri and Bharati in Antarctica, Himadri in the Arctic, and Himansh in the Himalayas - supporting climate and environmental studies.

Over the past 25 years, NCPOR has groen into a renowned institution, playing a vital role in advancing polar and ocean research."

At the bottom of the Back of the Special Cover (SC) is the logo of India Post and that of Maharashtra Postal Circle.

The Cover has been issued under Maharashtra Postal Circle'a approval No. MH/20/2025.

The Serial No. of this SC is 1878/2000. I have purchased five of these SCs for my collection.
