1777) "Mama Quilla", Goddess of the Moon, an INCAN Deity, Tuvalu Island: A $2 Silver Coin issued by  Perth Mint Australia, features a dome insert containing silver particles surrounded by a representation of the Incan goddess: Year of Coin issue: 2021:

Goddess of the Moon, Mama Quilla:

She was an important deity for the people of the Inca Empire who portrayed her as a silver disk with a female face on it. Associated with the moon through numerous mythological stories, Mama Quilla was believed to shed tears of silver that fell to Earth and could be mined as precious metal.

The Inca Civilisation flourished in the Andes region of South America from the 12 Century AD until the Spanish conquest of the 1500s.

In Inca mythology, she was the daughter of Viracocha, the creator God, and wife and sister of the Sun God Inti.

Revered for preventing the world falling into complete darkness, Mama Quilla was believed to shed silver tears that fell to earth and could be mined as precious metal.

The Coin:

On the Reverse of the $2 Silver Coin, this unique design portrays an artistic impression of Mama Quilla and her animal adversaries.

The deity’s figure surrounds a Perspex dome containing silver particles suspended in purified mineral oil. Also included on the Reverse is The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark (at centre left).

The Obverse of the $2 Silver Coin depicts Ian Rank-Broadley 's effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and a circular pattern of Inca crosses (chakana). The peripheral inscriptions read - "QUEEN ELIZABETH II. TUVALU. 2 DOLLARS. 2 OZ. 9999 Ag. 2021".

The specifications of this Coin are:

Country of issue: Tuvalu Island; Year: 2021; Denomination/Face Value: $2 (Two Dollars); Metal Composition: .999 Fineness Silver (Ag); Weight: 2.0 Oz or 62.213 grams; Diameter/Size: 45.60 mm; Thickness: 6.50 mm; Coin Quality: Antique Finish; Mintage: 2,500 pieces; Special Technique: High Relief; Presentation Box/Case: Yes; Certificate of Authenticity (COA): Yes; Legal Tender: Tuvalu Legal Tender; Reverse Designer: Natasha Muhl.

Other highlights:

i) Presentation Packaging:

The coin is housed in a varnished "Mama Quilla" plastic case moulded in the shape of Mama Quilla’s face. Her lower lip opens like a drawer to display the coin enclosed inside. The case comes in a shipper featuring Inca-style patterns formed from dark blue brush-like flocking.

ii) Inca Deity Design:

The coin centre is filled by a Perspex dome containing silver particles suspended in purified white mineral oil - a metaphor for the tears of Mama Quilla, who is portrayed on the piece’s outer ring. Including The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, the design includes representations of a panther and a serpent, hostile animals according to Inca mythology that tried to devour Mama Quilla during the lunar eclipse.

iii) Antiqued Finish:

In keeping with the coin’s ancient theme, it has been antiqued, a treatment that tones the natural lustre of silver before it is individually hand finished to mimic the unique characteristics often seen on an ancient artefact. The coin has been individually ‘antiqued’ to give it a unique finish conveying the surface abrasions of an ancient artefact. As a result of this treatment the appearance of each coin may vary.
