The Central Bank of Aruba (CBA) has issued Silver Proof Collector Coins that mark the Caribbean island’s centenary of aviation development and travel.
The first flight:
In 1923, when the first two airplanes landed in the Paardenbaai Harbour of Oranjestad, Aruba, carrying their first passengers, led to the beginning of aviation in Aruba.
From 1934, fully licensed, regularly scheduled commercial passenger flights also started on the island, which consisted of one flight per week and up to six passengers that could be transported between Aruba and Curacao.
Once a week, six passengers could be transported between Aruba and Curaçao.
In 1942 a small building was erected that functioned as a terminal and since then aruba airport has been expanded and modernized.
Queen Beatrix International Airport currently flies to more than 30 destinations in more than ten countries.
A Celebratory Event:
Aruba Airport Authority N.V., in collaboration with the Aruban Government, the Aruba Tourism Authority, the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA), Air Navigation Services Aruba N.V. (ANSA), and other industry professionals, recently organised an exciting Aviation Expo to celebrate Aruba's 100th year in Aviation.
This significant milestone in Aruba's history was commemorated on 18.08.2023.
The Aviation Expo took place at Aruba's private airport, JET-TNCA, and served as a gathering point for aviation enthusiasts, industry professionals, and the Aruban community at large. The event showcased a diverse range of displays, exhibits, and interactive activities that captivated visitors of all ages.
One of the main highlights of the expo was the impressive display of aircraft and equipment.
Visitors had the unique opportunity to explore various types of aircraft up close, allowing them to appreciate the intricate details and engineering marvels that make aviation possible. Additionally, flight simulators provided an immersive experience for attendees, enabling them to feel what it's like to pilot an aircraft and gain insights into the complexities of flying.
The Aviation Expo also aimed to inform and educate attendees about the aviation industry. Informative discussions and presentations were held, featuring industry experts who shared their knowledge and insights on various topics related to aviation.
These sessions offered valuable learning opportunities for both aspiring aviators and those interested in the field.
The expo also showcased the essential role of emergency services in aviation.
Various emergency response units participated, including fire trucks, air ambulances, police helicopters, and demonstrations by the coast guard and the airport's fire department. These displays highlighted the preparedness and professionalism of the emergency services personnel who ensure the safety and security of aviation operations.
In addition to the exhibits and displays, visitors had the unique chance to embark on a tour of Aruba Airport's runway in the E Cobus 300, the Caribbean's first electric airport bus.
This eco-friendly transportation provided attendees with a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the airport's operations and allowed them to witness firsthand the commitment of Aruba's aviation industry to sustainable practices.
The Commemorative Coin:
The Commemorative Coin has been minted by the Royal Dutch Mint (RDM) at its facilities in Houten, Netherlands, and on behalf of the Central Bank of Aruba (CBA).
The Reverse of the 5 Florin Silver Proof Coin with applied colour depicts the image of a vintage U.S. Navy Curtiss H-16 as it flies into view.
This was the first of the two maritime patrol flying boats that landed in Horse Bay adjacent to Paardenbaai Harbour on 18.08.1923.
As it is coming in for a landing at the airstrip near the Paardenbaai Harbour of Oranjestad, a detailed aerial navigator’s map of the coast is shown as it would have appeared 100 years ago.
A commemorative inscription is inscribed on the outer periphery - which is shown on a broad golden-coloured ring which reads - "100TH ANNIVERSARY ARUBA AVIATION" placed above the design.
The commemorative years 1923 – 2023 are seen just under the design on the bottom periphery.
The Obverse of the 5 Florin Silver Proof Coin features the official Aruban crest in the centre along with a miniature National Flag depicted in full colour to the centre left of the crest and a representation of the Dutch crown placed to the centre right.
The text "ARUBA 2023" and "5 FLORIN" is placed along the right periphery.
The edge of the coin includes incused lettering which reads - "DIOS * TA *CU * NOS*".

- Each Silver Proof Coin is encapsulated and presented in a matte white heavy-gauge card custom case accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity (COA).
