Eise Eisinga Planetarium 10 Euro Coin 2026 GSilver Proof
The Header/Banner is titled - OFFICIAL COMMEMORATIVE COIN 2026 - Eise Eisinga PLANETERIUM".
Commemorative 5 Euro Coin in top quality Silver
Silver issue for the oldest working Planetarium in the world:
- One-man, countless calculations and notes, an ingenious gear mechanism driven by a single clock, and the result: a planetarium that remains operational to this day.
- The Eise Eisinga Planetarium demonstrates what is possible when knowledge, patience, and craftsmanship come together.
- The Planetarium was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023, and now an official commemorative coin has been issued.
- Commissioned by the Ministry of Finance, the Royal Dutch Mint presents the Eise Eisinga Planetarium 2026 Gold Ten Euro Coin.
Eise Eisinga:
- Eise Eisinga was born on February 21, 1744, in Dronrijp, the son of a wool comber. Following tradition, he worked in his father's business alongside his schooling.
- His father also played a key role in fostering Eise's interest in astronomy and mathematics; from the age of fifteen, Eise walked to Franeker every week for extra lessons.
- At the age of 24, Eise Eisinga married and became a wool comber in Franeker. However, his interest in astronomy did not fade; he built the Planetarium during his spare time.
The Planetarium:
- Based on hundreds of calculations and notes, Eisinga began building the Planetarium in 1774 in a truly unique location: his own living room.
- The solar system was scaled down by a factor of a trillion, and an elaborate gear mechanism had to be constructed to set the Planetarium in motion.
- A remarkable detail is that a single clock drives the entire system; for this, he collaborated with a professional Frisian clockmaker.
- His father and brother were also involved in the project. Today, the Planetarium remains fully functional and intact.
Design:
- The Eise Eisinga Planetarium Silver 5 (Five) Euro Coin was designed by Armand Mevis. He opted for a clear and accessible design.
The Obverse and Reverse of the 5 (Five) Euro Silver Coin placed together.
The Reverse of the 5 Euro Silver Coin
- The Reverse depicts the sun and the planets known at the time; these planets appear in relief, raised above the coin's background.
- At the centre of the coin stands the Planetarium itself, inspired by a drawing by Barentie Willem Dietz from 1824.
- Shading techniques are used to render the living room—and the Planetarium within it—in perspective.
The Obverse of the 10 Euro Gold Coin
- The Obverse features King Willem-Alexander, his gaze directed toward the cosmos.
In the background, two well-known astronomical phenomena—discovered years after the construction of Eise’s Planetarium—are depicted: the black hole, predicted by Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity, and the nature of the Milky Way galaxy, demonstrated by Edwin Hubble.
This top quality Silver Proof coin comes in a luxury wooden packaging with the logo of the Eise Eisinga Planetarium carved in it together with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) and Information Brochure (IB).
