About The Netherlands (NL) Crypto Stamp:
PostNL (Netherlands Post) on 22.09.2022, has released a NL Crypto Stamp, marked with "R" (for registered mail weighing up to 2.00 kg destined for delivery inside of the Netherlands).
The NL Crypto Stamp is the first ever Crypto Stamp to be issued by PostNL.
Each physical Postage Stamp has a digital twin in the blockchain.
It is also the world's first ever joint issue of a crypto stamp:
PostNL and Österreichische Post are simultaneously issuing their own crypto stamp based on the same design, featuring the colours of the respective country’s flag, each with the same symbol but with a different denomination.
More about Crypto Stamps:
Crypto stamps are a recent phenomenon.
In 2019, Austria's National Postal Service, Österreichische Post AG, became the first postal service in the world to issue a crypto stamp.
It was followed by Gibraltar, Croatia, Liechtenstein, Malta, the United Arab Emirates, the UN and Switzerland.
With the NL crypto stamp, PostNL is next in line. As is the case with other crypto stamps, each individual NL crypto stamp is linked to a digital twin in the blockchain.
Blockchain is a computer technology that uses distributed databases to secure the ownership of crypto money and other digital assets such as crypto art and crypto stamps.
These digital items are also known as NFTs, non-fungible tokens.
One can view the digital twin of the NL crypto stamp on a computer or smartphone at any time. It is also possible to store it in a digital collection or sell it using a digital wallet.
Authenticity:
One can activate the NFC function on one's smartphone by holding the phone near the NL crypto stamp to check its authenticity.
Finding out the colour:
Each NL crypto stamp has a digital twin with a particular colour in the blockchain.
There are five different colours, some of which are more common than others. One can activate one's NL crypto stamp to discover the colour of the digital twin by scanning the QR-code on the front or entering the code [1] and code [A] on the reverse at NLcryptostamp.nl.
Transferring digital twins to a wallet:
If one wishes to store, trade or sell the digital twin, one needs a wallet to do so.
One must create this virtual (crypto) wallet oneself. Once this is done, one can add the NL crypto stamp to one's wallet.
The person can choose from a number of different wallets for the NL crypto stamp.
The most commonly used one is MetaMask. This crypto wallet can be downloaded as an app or accessed via Chrome and Firefox.
One does not need a cryptocurrency to store one's collection in one's wallet.
If one wants to store, transfer or sell the NL crypto stamp to other users via the blockchain, one does need a cryptocurrency, however, as well as, the ‘secret word list’.
This list becomes visible when one carefully removes the security foil from code [2] and Scanning the QR code or by entering the ‘secret word list’ at NLcryptostamp.nl.
PostNL and Österreichische Post AG have decided to use Polygon for storing and trading digital twins.
Polygon (MATIC) is a so-called token, a cryptocurrency that works through the existing Ethereum network and is easy to use in combination with other NFT platforms.
Polygon processes transactions faster and cheaper than many other cryptocurrencies.
The stamp sheet with the NL crypto stamp is the size of a bank card and is made of extra strong reinforced paper.
The physical stamp has been affixed to the front of the stamp sheet, in the centre. The stamp can be detached along the perforated edges.
The background of both the sheet and the stamp features the stripes of the Dutch flag with an added crystal structure. A pattern of silver tulips runs across the flag.
Österreichische Post Crypto Stamp:
As was the case with the previous crypto stamp issues by Österreichische Post, the design of this jointly issued crypto stamp features a unique symbol.
Designs for the earlier Austrian editions included a unicorn, a whale and a panda.
The PostNL and Österreichische Post version features the silver silhouette of a bull’s head in the top left-hand corner.
The bull is not just a symbol of courage and perseverance; it also represents ‘bull markets’, which is how the world of the stock exchange refers to rising markets.
The denomination "R" for registered mail is printed in the top right-hand corner of the stamp and a QR code with a link to the digital twin can be found in the bottom right-hand corner.
The country (Nederland) and the year (2022) are printed in the bottom left-hand corner of the stamp.
The Reverse of the stamp sheet features a number of codes, a QR code and a ‘secret word list’ for viewing, storing and selling the digital twin of the NL crypto stamp in the blockchain.
The image on the Reverse is the same as that on the front, with the Dutch tricolour, the crystal structure and the silver tulips.
The upper right-hand corner of the Reverse features the unicorn logo, which has been used as a symbol for crypto stamps since the very first issue by Austria in 2019.
For the typography, the designer has used OCR-A, (an optically readable letter) created in 1968 by American Type Founders. OCR-A was one of the first fonts specifically designed to be read by computers.
Ground-breaking:
The issue of the NL crypto stamp is groundbreaking for several reasons.
- It is the first crypto stamp PostNL has ever issued, and
- It is also the first joint issue (together with Österreichische Post) of a crypto stamp worldwide.
Tulips and Edelweiss:
The joint issue with Österreichische Post features different flags and also a different national flower. Whilr the tulip is the National Flower of The Netherlands, the Edelweiss is the National Flwer of Austria.
Five colours:
The digital twins are stored in the blockchain in five different colours.
The likelihood of getting a particular colour depends on the colour - there are 1,400 red, 9,334 yellow, 18,666 blue, 37,334 green and 73,266 black stamps.
Therefore, a red digital twin is much rarer than a black one, for example.
The digital twin of the crypto stamp is randomly generated.
Scan the QR code on the stamp with a smartphone to find out which colour is linked to one's NL crypto stamp.
Onchainshop:
If one wishes, one can also buy the digital twin of the NL crypto stamp directly via the blockchain, by visiting the onchainshop at crypto.post.at using a browser with a cryptocurrency wallet.
First, add the Polygon (MATIC) cryptocurrency to one's wallet with a credit card at crypto.post.at.
Then one can use the Polygon in one's wallet to buy the NL crypto stamp at crypto.post.at.
The digital twin will now be in the buyer's wallet. It is also possible to request the corresponding physical stamp.
The buyer will have up to five years after the purchase to apply for the physical stamp.
Security:
The NL Crypto Stamp is protected by a variety of different measures.
For example, it comes in sturdy, well-sealed packaging especially designed to protect the stamp. The NL crypto stamp with its associated codes can only be viewed by breaking off the side strips of the sealed packaging.
There are three codes printed on the reverse of the stamp sheet.
- Enter code [1] and code [A] at NLcryptostamp.nl to discover the colour of the digital twin.
- Code [2] is the ‘secret word list’. This allows the buyer to transfer the digital twin to other users. The ‘secret word list’ is revealed by carefully removing the security foil.
- Keep this information in a safe place and do not share it with others.
- The identity of the owner of each crypto stamp is recorded in the blockchain, invisible to those who do not have these codes.
- The stamp sheet with the NL crypto stamp also includes a locked cryptographic NFC chip that allows one to quickly check the authenticity of the crypto stamp with any smartphone.
One can do this by holding the stamp sheet with the NL crypto stamp close to your smartphone. You do not need a separate app. Every modern smartphone with NFC functionality can read the chip.
Austrian Version:
Österreichische Post has issued its version of the latest crypto stamp – the Crypto stamp 4.0 – on the same day PostNL issues theirs.
Its design is very similar to that of the NL crypto stamp, but there are a few important differences.
For example, the denomination "R" of the Dutch issue has been replaced with the Austrian rate of € 9.90.
In the background, the stamp sheet features the Austrian flag with its red-white-red stripes instead of the Dutch flag.
It also features Edelweiss rather than Tulips. The Crypto stamp 4.0 is available for purchase at branches of Österreichische Post (excluding Post Partners) and online and via the onchainshop at crypto.post.at.
- The validity period is indefinite.
Layered design (s):
The design of the Dutch and Austrian crypto stamp for 2022 is made up of several layers - the country flags in the background, the crystal structure in the middle, the grid pattern of the national flowers, and the graphic stamp elements (bull’s head, typography and QR code).
In the top left-hand corner of the stamp, a prominent place is reserved for the silhouette of a bull’s head.
