Steam Power - Australian Rail Heritage Coin Series:

"Australian Rail Heritage Coin Series" brings together seven iconic locomotives to celebrate the golden age of Australian Steam Engines.

Covering more than a century of steam travel, the story of the railways opening up the country and putting Australia on a path to federation and a modern nation is presented on this Coin Series.

The Third Coin features the "NSW South Maitland Railways No.25 (1923), Steam Locomotive/Engine:

A Brief:

The South Maitland Railway was once an extensive network of privately owned colliery and passenger railway lines which served the South Maitland coalfields in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia and were the second last system in Australia to use steam haulage, having used steam locomotives until 1983.

The last section was mothballed in March 2020 after operations at the Austar coal mine in Pelton were suspended.

SMR 25 was built by Beyer, Peacock and Company (in 1923), which was an English Railway Locomotive manufacturer with a factory in Openshaw, Manchester.

Founded by Charles Beyer, Richard Peacock and Henry Robertson, it traded from 1854 until 1966.

The Company exported locomotives and machine tools to service them throughout the world.

The South Maitland Railways 10 Class locomotives to which SMR 25 belonged is a class of 14 2-8-2T steam locomotives built for the East Greta Coal Company (later South Maitland Railway) by Beyer, Peacock and Company in Manchester, England, between 1911 and 1925.

Members of this class of locomotive were the last steam locomotives in commercial use in Australia.

In the 1980s SMR No.25 became the last commercially operated steam locomotive in Australia.

It is preserved in the The Richmond Vale Railway Museum located at the heritage-listed Richmond Main Colliery south of Kurri Kurri, New South Wales.

The museum is a volunteer non-profit organization, formed in 1979 with the aim of preserving the Richmond Vale railway line and the mining heritage of J & A Brown and the Hunter Valley.
