Seven Wonders of the Ancient World:

The ancient world in the Mediterranean and Middle East was full of architectural beauties from which eyes crossed. Some of them dazzled so much that even after thousands of years we still recount with awe the seven wonders of the world.

Legendary ancient monuments are being depicted in this Coin Series titled "Seven Wonders of the ancient World" , with each one of the one-ounce gold coins from the Czech Mint depicting one of the Ancient Wonders.

The second of the seven wonders of the ancient world are the hanging gardens of Babylon (Semiramidina).

Several legends tell about how the hanging gardens of Babylon were created.

It is possible that they were built by the mythical "Semiramis" – the queen who made Babylon the largest and most spectacular metropolis of antiquity.

Another legend claims that they were a gift from King Nebuchadnezzar II to Queen Amytis, who missed the mountainous nature of her homeland.

On the stepped terraces of the hanging gardens, which rose high into the sky, tender flowers and massive trees grew.

This was made possible by an ingenious irrigation system consisting of an extensive network of pipes, high-lying wells and spiral pumps through which workers constantly pumped water from the Euphrates.

The gardens provided a cooling refuge from the scorching heat of the Babylonian sun, which is why many people visited them. Yet few accounts of them have survived – it is not even certain whether an earthly paradise in the middle of the desert really existed...

The Gold Coin:

The Reverse of the 50 NZD (New Zealand Dollars) Coin, designed by medal maker Petra Brodská, DiS., presents the supposed appearance of hanging gardens with numerous terraces, columns, trees and waterfalls. The English transcript states "THE HANGING GARDENS OF BABYLON".

On the Obverse of the 50 NZD (New Zealand Dollars) Coin, which is common to the whole cycle, presents all the seven wonders of the world – the Egyptian pyramids, the hanging gardens of Semiramidina, the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, Feidius' statue of Zeus in Olympia, the Mausoleum in Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes and the lighthouse on the island of Faru.

Since the coins of the Czech Mint are issued under a foreign license of the island of Niue, they also bear on the obverse side the portrait and name of Queen Elizabeth II, the nominal value of 50 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue "2021".
