About EUROPA - National Archaeological Discoveries, Austria: Austrian Post has issued a EUROPA Stamp featuring the burial site at Hallstatt:

Austria’s chosen motif features the cemetery of Hallstatt.

Due to the significant archaeological finds made there, the early Iron Age is known as the Hallstatt period.

Mine supervisor Johann Georg Ramsauer recognised the importance of the site as a burial ground and excavated 980 graves between 1846 and 1863, meticulously documenting his discoveries.

Since 1877, the Natural History Museum in Vienna has been involved in the research and has conducted modern investigations since 1933.

The graves date from approximately 800 to 350 BC, and it is believed that around 5,000 people were buried there.

Grave goods such as jewellery, weapons, and ceramic vessels—likely filled with food and drink—have also been found.

The EUROPA Stamp:

The EUROPA stamp features a plan of the burial site from Ramsauer’s time and a bronze ladle adorned with animal figures.
