4694) " The Origins of the Ducat, Republic of Austria (Republik Österreich): Osterreich Munz (Austrian Mint) has issued a Restrike of a Gold Ducat Coin first minted in 1915:
Origins of the Ducat:
Early Silver Ducats: The term “Ducat” comes from Medieval Latin "Ducalis" (“Duke’s Coin”).
The first Ducat was a silver issue by Roger II of Sicily in 1140, bearing Christ on the obverse and Roger with his son on the reverse.
Venetian Gold Ducat: In 1284, Venice introduced the gold ducat under Doge Giovanni Dandolo. It was modeled on the Florentine florin but struck with slightly higher purity (99.47%).
The Ducat's Spread Across Europe:
Trade Coin: The Venetian ducat quickly became the dominant trade coin in Europe, used in commerce from the Mediterranean to Northern Europe.
Austro-Hungarian Ducats: Austria began minting ducats in 1612. These coins circulated widely until World War I, featuring monarchs like Franz Joseph I and the double-headed eagle.
Other Nations: At least ten nations issued gold ducats, including the Netherlands, Poland, Hungary, Russia, and Sweden.
Historical Significance:
Trusted Currency: Its consistent weight and purity made it a benchmark coin for centuries.
Symbol of Power: Designs reflected religious devotion (Christ, saints) and imperial authority (Habsburg eagle).
End of Circulation: Regular minting ceased around 1914, but restrikes are still produced by the Austrian Mint today.
The gold ducat’s legacy spans 700 years, from Venice’s maritime empire to the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.
In Austria:
- Ducats were first minted in Venice in the 13th century. From there, they spread throughout Europe and also came to Austria at the beginning of the 16th century.
- Both the 1-fold and the 4-fold ducat were official means of payment here until 1858.
Until 1915, the ducats were still officially produced as trade gold coins.
Modern Day Restrikes:
The year 1915 can also be seen on all modern restrikes, as well as Emperor Franz Joseph and the double eagle.
This design was first used in 1872, when Franz Joseph was at the head of the Austro-Hungarian Empire for 68 years, making him one of the longest-serving monarchs of modern times.
The 1-fold golden ducat has a diameter of 19.75 millimeters, the 4-fold golden ducat is exactly twice as large at 39.5 millimeters.
Both variants of the precious piece are also available in an elegant velvet case and matching gift packaging. There is something for every occasion and every taste.
The gold ducat is one of Europe’s most famous trade coins, first struck in Venice in 1284 and later adopted across Austria, Hungary, and other states. Known for its exceptional purity (about 98.6% fine gold, ~3.5 g), it became a trusted international currency until the early 20th century.
The Latin legend on the Austrian Mint’s 1915 Gold Ducat restrikes translates into English as: “Francis Joseph I, by the Grace of God, Emperor of Austria” on the obverse.
Obverse Legend (Front Side)
Latin Inscription:
"FRANC·IOS·I·D·G·AVSTRIAE·IMPERATOR" (English Translation: "Francis Joseph I, by Grace of God, Emperor of Austria".
Design: Laureated bust of Emperor Franz Joseph I facing right.
-Reverse Legend (Back Side)
Latin: Inscription:
"HVNGAR·BOHEM·GAL·LOD·ILL·REX·A·A·1915"
English Translation: King of Hungary, Bohemia, Galicia, Lodomeria, Illyria, Archduke of Austria
Design: Double-headed Habsburg eagle with shield bearing arms of Austria, orb and scepter in claws, Imperial Crown above.
Date “1915”: All restrikes carry the frozen date of 1915, even though they were minted later (from 1920 onward).
Purity: Struck in .986 fine gold (23.75 carats), making them among the purest historical gold coins. the centerpiece is the double-headed Habsburg eagle, a powerful dynastic emblem of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The Double Eagle description:
Symbolism:
The two heads represent the dual monarchy — Austria and Hungary — and more broadly the empire’s claim to both secular and spiritual authority.
Crown:
Above the eagle rests the
Imperial Crown of Austria, signifying sovereignty and legitimacy.
Shield:
The eagle bears a central
shield with the arms of Austria, reinforcing dynastic identity.
Regalia:
In its talons, the eagle
grasps the orb (symbol of Christian dominion) and the scepter (symbol of
imperial authority).
Style:
The engraving is highly
detailed yet thinly struck, consistent with the Ducat’s medieval-inspired
design.
