has reproduced the obverse design of the Waterloo Medal for the reverse of this
2024-dated coin.
Faithfully recreated effigies of George, the Prince Regent -
later King George IV, Emperor Francis I of Austria, Tsar Alexander I of Russia
and King Frederick William III of Prussia are surrounded by allegorical figures
of Greek and Roman mythology.
The obverse depicts an effigy of King Charles
III, designed by sculptor Martin Jennings.
The year of release 2024
and the denomination 5 POUNDS to 5000 POUNDS is part of the legend surrounding
the King’s image.

The gold coins are presented in
hardwood high-gloss cases with numbered certificates of authenticity, while the
silver options are housed in black matte cases and also accompanied by a
numbered certificate of authenticity.
A second range of
coins featuring the reverse design with Wellington and Blucher will follow in
2025.
Benedetto Pistrucci, Extraordinary Medallic Artisan:
Believed by many
numismatic experts and museum curators as being perhaps the most impressive
medal ever designed in Britain, Benedetto Pistrucci's (1783 – 1855) Waterloo
medal is without a doubt the famed engraver's true masterpiece. As the artist
who gave numismatics the iconic St George slaying the Dragon reverse design
which has graced gold sovereigns and silver crowns alike since 1817, the
Waterloo medal was commissioned by George, the Prince Regent to celebrate the
Allied victory at the Battle of Waterloo which decisively defeated the armies
of Emperor Napoleon.
The defeat resulted in his abdication and self-imposed
exile to the island of Elba near Corsica, ancestral homeland of the
Bonapartes. The Battle of Waterloo took place on the 18th June 1815 in
present-day Belgium and was the culmination of the War of the Seventh
Coalition, the final phase of the Napoleonic Wars that had divided Europe
since 1803. In March 1815, Napoleon escaped from his first place of exile,
returning to Paris and his ultimate 'Hundred Days' restoration. In response,
the four great powers of the time - Russia, Austria, Prussia and the United
Kingdom formed a new alliance with the Duke of Wellington commanding a
British-led army and Field Marshall Graf von Blücher in charge of Prussian
forces. The four-nation coalition was triumphant against Napoleon and his
armies, he retreated to Paris and abdicated a final time effectively ending
his dominance of the continent. Napoleon was later permanently exiled to the
island of Saint Helena where he died six years later. Negotiations after the
battle essentially re-drew the map of Europe, creating new countries such as
an independent united Dutch and Belgian Kingdom, the Spanish and Tuscany
crowns were returned to their previous royal houses and a German confederation
was formed.
The Bourbons were also returned to the throne of France where they
remained until 1848 and until the restoration of the Second French Empire in
1852. During this time, a relatively extended time of peace was experienced by
Europe and Great Britain became the undisputed naval and economic power in
Europe and around the world. The Waterloo medal was commissioned via the Royal
Academy who initially appointed the neoclassical sculptor Sir John Flaxman.
Transferring designs onto steel dies would be the job of newly appointed Royal
Mint engraver Benedetto Pistrucci who was previously employed by members of
the Bonaparte family as a jeweller, he made his way to London shortly after
the battle of Waterloo. It was William Wellesley-Pole, brother of the Duke of
Wellington and Master of the Royal Mint who noticed the talents of Pistrucci
and commissioned him to create the effigy of King George III which was used on
the coins from the great re-coinage act of 1816. Despite objections from the
Royal Academy, Pistrucci declined to work from John Flaxman's Waterloo medal
design and preferred to create his own wax models which, were well received by
the Prince Regent.
For his efforts, Pistrucci was awarded the commission in
August 1819 as well as the princely sum of £2400 and a separate artist's
salary of £500. To create his profile of the Prince-Regent which was to be
included on the obverse side, Pistrucci insisted on personal sittings with the
future monarch which aided him immensely.
Pistrucci later used these sketches
to create models which would be used for official Coronation medals for the
Prince after he was crowned as King George IV in 1820.
Unfortunately, the
Waterloo medal was a casualty in the dispute between Pistrucci and in-house
competitors resulting in continued delays of production and completion of the
final dies. Being ineligible as a foreign national to be named chief engraver,
Pistrucci was nonetheless appointed chief medallist in 1828.
From this time
until 1849, Benedetto Pistrucci finally presented intermediate moulds for the
Waterloo medal to the Royal Mint on the 1st January.
At 5.3 inches or, 130
millimetres in diameter, Mint officials were uncertain the moulds could be
hardened and converted to dies without the likelihood of major damage.
The
design of the Waterloo Medal depicts on the obverse four effigies of the
coalition rulers facing left, all four are shown in Roman-style cloaks and
wearing wreath crowns of laurel, symbolic of their triumph.
From left to right
George, Prince Regent, later King George IV, Emperor Francis I of Austria,
Tsar Alexander I of Russia and King Frederick William III of Prussia. They are
surrounded by figures from Greek and Roman mythology such as Hercules, Apollo,
Zephyrus and Iris.
The reverse side is as spectacular as the obverse with
intricately detailed scenes and representations of the battle’s heroes, the
Duke of Wellington and Marshall von Blücher who are portrayed on horseback as
if riding into battle along with the winged figure of Victory in between,
guiding their horses to eventual triumph.
As with the obverse, Wellington and
von Blücher are centred and surrounded with ornate representations of the king
of the Gods, Jupiter shown above the primary design driving his horse-drawn
chariot. Holding a greater degree of symbolism is the design shown below
Wellington and von Blücher, as nineteen serpent-footed giants are depicted as
having been defeated.
They represent the nineteen years of war, noting the
first of Napoleon's first Italian campaign in 1796. This year is calculated as
the beginning of the Napoleonic wars rather than 1799 or 1803.
Pistrucci had
included inscriptions on one of the wax models above the Emperors, Kings and
Princes "ANGLIA AUSTRIA RUSSIA PRUSSIA" and below, "FŒDERE JUNCTIS" (Joint
League).
On the Reverse he placed above and below the figures in the centre
WATERLOO and 18 JUNE 1815.
However, he removed them for the final version of
the design but, these inscriptions were restored on the versions of the medal
struck by the Royal Mint in 2015 for the bicentenary of the battle.
Despite
the fact that Europe had experienced a somewhat peaceful time after Napoleon’s
defeat, much had changed in terms of political intrigue and alliances since
1815.
By the time Pistrucci completed his task of designing the Waterloo
medal, 34 years had elapsed since the battle, most especially, all the crowned
heads of state depicted on the obverse had since died, the last in 1840.
The
only man who was still living by 1849 was the Duke of Wellington, but most of
the decorated heroes and soldiers who would have received this accolade had
also died. British-French relations were restored and still intact though
strained at times however, the political climate was not appropriate to focus
on the decisive British victory over Napoleon nearly 35 years prior.
Benedetto
Pistrucci died in September 1855 aged 72 years and before his death, he left
precise instructions on how to successfully strike the medal for Royal Mint
technicians. The same year Pistrucci submitted completed moulds for the
Waterloo Medal, the Royal Mint abolished the positions of chief engraver and
chief medallist, with Pistrucci appointed a modeller and engraver to the Mint,
to receive a salary in addition to payment for any commissioned work.
This
effectively meant Pistrucci kept his place with the Mint for the remainder of
his life.
The closest resemblance of the Waterloo medal was finally produced
in 1965 on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the battle when the
private medallic company, John Pinches commissioned 5000 pieces in silver.
With a diameter of 64 millimetres, a weight of 3.9 ounces of sterling silver
and inscribed numbers on the edge, the medals were retailed to enthusiastic
collectors of Pistrucci’s work.
In 1990 and to mark the 175th anniversary of
Waterloo, The Royal Mint produced gold, silver and bronze medals with the
nearest specifications in terms of weight to the original project thus far.
At
63 millimetres in diameter for all versions the gold pieces were struck in
.375 fine gold and the sterling silver medals were struck in 250 grams.
In
2014, as part of the preparations for the battle's bicentenary, the
Worcestershire Medal Service, official medallists to the crown prepared
versions with a diameter of 80 millimetres struck in two kilograms of silver
initially commissioned by a collector coin distributor firm.
They were
presented by the current Duke of Wellington, a descendent of Arthur Wellesley
to the ambassadors of Austria, Russia and Germany. Queen Elizabeth II as a
kinsman of King George IV also received one of these specially prepared
medals.
