3497) Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Billy The Kid—Legends Of The Wild West!, Cook Islands: 250 Dollars (Gold) and 20 & 5 Dollars (Silver) coins been minted by B.H. Mayer's Kunstprägeanstalt, at its facilities in Munich by commission of Coin Invest Trust - CIT, on behalf of the Treasury of the Cook Islands: Year of Coin issue: 2024:
Wild Bill Hicock:
James Butler Hickok (May 27, 1837 – August 2, 1876),
better known as "Wild Bill" Hickok, was a folk hero of the American
Old West known for his life on the frontier as a soldier, scout, lawman, cattle
rustler, gunslinger, gambler, showman, and actor, and for his involvement in
many famous gunfights.
He earned a great deal of notoriety in his own time,
much of it bolstered by the many outlandish and often fabricated tales he told
about himself.
Some contemporaneous reports of his exploits are known to be fictitious,
but they remain the basis of much of his fame and reputation.
Hickok was born and raised on a farm in northern Illinois
at a time when lawlessness and vigilante activity were rampant because of the
influence of the "Banditti of the Prairie".
Drawn to this criminal
lifestyle, he headed West at age 18 as a fugitive from justice, working as a
stagecoach driver and later as a lawman in the frontier territories of Kansas
and Nebraska.
He fought and spied for the Union Army during the American Civil
War and gained publicity after the war as a scout, marksman, actor, and professional
gambler. He was involved in several notable shootouts during the course of his
life.
In 1876, Hickok was shot and killed while playing poker
in a saloon in Deadwood, Dakota Territory (present-day South Dakota) by Jack
McCall, an unsuccessful gambler.
The hand of cards that he supposedly held at
the time of his death has become known as the dead man's hand: two pairs; black
aces and eights.
Hickok remains a popular figure of frontier history. Many
historic sites and monuments commemorate his life, and he has been depicted
numerous times in literature, film, and television.
He is chiefly portrayed as
a protagonist, although historical accounts of his actions are often
controversial, and much of his career is known to have been exaggerated both by
himself and by contemporary mythmakers.
While Hickok claimed to have killed
numerous named and unnamed gunmen in his lifetime, his career as a gunfighter
only lasted from 1861 to 1871. Hickok killed only six or seven men in
gunfights, according to Joseph G. Rosa, Hickok's biographer and the foremost
authority on Wild Bill.
Wild Bill, Calamity Jane, Billy The Kid—Legends Of The
Wild West!
One was a well-known gunslinger and gambler. One was a
frontier woman who wore trousers and swore like a man. The other was an outlaw
and cattle rustler.
Together, Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, and Billy the
Kid are three of the most notable characters to ever slap leather in the heyday
of America’s Wild West. And all three are together on this, the fourth release
in the Legends Series that captures some of the famous figures of the American
Frontier.
The Coins:
Front and center on the ($250 Dollars - Gold) and (and ($ 20 & $5 - Twenty & Five Dollars - Silver) Coin’s Obverse is none other than William
Bonney AKA Billy the Kid, his six-shooter pointed in the viewer’s general
direction as if to say, “Make a wrong move and yore life ain’t worth a plugged
nickel!”
Wild Bill and Martha “Calamity” Jane Canary stand behind The Kid ready
to leap into action.
In the 4th edition of the "Legends" series, we venture into the untamed Wild West. Amidst this captivating chapter in history, three individuals stand out.
Wild Bill Hickok, the legendary gunslinger and gambler, was hailed as one of the early Heroes of the West. Also renowned for his charm, persistent rumours suggest an intimate connection with the notorious yet enigmatic frontierswoman, Calamity Jane.
According to legend, Wild Bill met his end at a poker table in Saloon 10 in Deadwood.
The hand he held at the time of his murder forever etched in history as the "Dead Man’s Hand."
Billy the Kid, depicted in the center, became infamous as both a gunslinger and cattle rustler. His brief yet eventful life included at least nine murders and a daring prison escape.
Look closely and you’ll see an engraving that reads, “DEAD
MAN’S HAND” superimposed before a pair of aces and eights—the hand Wild Bill
was holding when he was gunned down while playing poker in a Deadwood, Dakota
Territory saloon.
The ($250 Dollars - Gold) and ($ 20 & $5 - Twenty & Five Dollars - Silver) Coin’s obverse continues the Wild West theme with a
design that shows a stagecoach racing past a towering cactus.
The coach driver
is urging his horses on with a cracking whip while his partner takes aim with a
shotgun at whoever is pursuing them.
Is it highwaymen looking to rob the
passengers and payroll, or could it be a war party of bloodthirsty Indians who
have jumped the reservation and are bent on reclaiming their land?
On the obverse the coat of arms is tilted and curved to the outside, integrated in the sheriff’s star.
