What is a Sugar Maple:

A Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum) is a large deciduous tree native to eastern North America, best known as the primary source of maple syrup and as the species whose leaf is the National Emblem of Canada.

Key Facts About the Sugar Maple:

Scientific Name: Acer saccharum

Family: Sapindaceae (soapberry family)

Native Range: Eastern Canada and the eastern United States

Height: Can grow 25–35 meters tall (80–115 feet)

Lifespan: Often lives 200–300 years

Leaf: 5-lobed, turns brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red in autumn

Wood: Known as “hard maple” or “rock maple,” valued for furniture, flooring, and musical instruments

Cultural & Economic Importance:

Maple Syrup Production: Sap collected in early spring is boiled down to make maple syrup and sugar. A single mature tree can yield 40 liters of sap per season, producing about 1 litre of syrup.

National Symbol: The sugar maple leaf is featured prominently on the Canadian flag and coins, including the Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin.

Timber Use: Hard, dense wood is prized for durability and aesthetics. Specialty figured lumber like “bird’s-eye maple” and “curly maple” is highly sought after.
