The Terracotta Army: is a collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang - ( (founder of the Qin dynasty and the first emperor of a unified China. He became emperor when he was 38 after the Qin had conquered all the warring states and unified all of China in 221 BC).

It is a form of funerary Art buried with the Emperor in 210-209 BC, with the purpose of protecting the Emperor in his afterlife.

The figures were discovered in 1974 by local farmers digging a well in Lintong County, outside Xi'an, Shaanxi, China.

The terracotta figures vary in height according to their roles, with the tallest being the generals and include warriors, chariots and horses. It is estimated that the four main pits containing the Terracotta Army held more than 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses, the majority of which remained buried in the pits near Qin Shi Huang's mausoleum built in a pyramidical shape. The earthen tomb mound is surrounded by two walls with gateway entrances. The necropolis consists of several offices, halls, stables and other structures and an Imperial Park placed around the tomb mound.  The warriors stand guard to the East of the tomb.

The Terracotta Army figures were placed in the pits in precise military formation according to rank and duty. Most of the figures originally held real weapons, most of which were looted by vandals. Nevertheless, over 40,000 items have been recovered including swords, daggers, spears, lances, battle-axes, scimitars, shields, crossbows and crossbow triggers.

Other terracotta non-military figures were found in other pits, including officials, acrobats, strongmen and musicians.

The Terracotta Army is regarded as one of the greatest discoveries of the 20th Century:

The most impressive feature are rows and rows of thousands of individually detailed soldiers, who have been given unique features that represented actual soldiers of the day. Some of the soldiers are burly in size, while others are given stern looks to their faces. Still others were given distinctive armour, hairstyles and decorative clothing which represent different ranks of the soldiers. The soldiers were molded in parts, fired in a kiln like pottery, then assembled and painted.

The army laid underground for more than 2,000 years until its discovery and is now considered to be one of the greatest archaeological sites in the world. The site became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
