On September 9, 2024, La Poste has issued a service stamp to frank mail from UNESCO.
Everyone has the right freely to take part in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific progress and its benefits.
Article 27, paragraph 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), 1948:
Founded in 1945, in the aftermath of the Second World War, UNESCO has been striving for almost 80 years to build a better future for humanity by promoting peace and security through international cooperation in the fields of education, science and culture.
Faced with global challenges such as climate change, environmental crises and the growing questioning of scientific discourse, UNESCO's mandate is essential to provide a response to these challenges that jeopardise peace and global prosperity.
It is for these very reasons that the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed, on 25 August 2023, the period from 2024 to 2033 as the International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development and invited UNESCO to lead its implementation.
This Decade offers humanity a unique opportunity to fully harness the power of science to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and ensure a prosperous and secure future for all.
The International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development recognizes science as a common good for humanity and reaffirms its fundamental role in humanity’s quest for a development model that improves the human condition while preserving the planet on which our survival depends.
To this end, the Decade aims to restore trust in the scientific discourse, encourage critical and reasoned thinking, and strengthen international cooperation. In this way, together we are laying the foundations for a more resilient, equitable and enlightened world.
