What could be better suited to spring and Easter than sweet, lovable bunnies! And not just any ones, but those by Albrecht Dürer.

The Header/Banner presents a cheerful scene of three Rabbits painting by Albrecht Dürer the Younger. The Header depicts the Obverse of the Five Euro Silver Proof Coin.

In the Information Card is given the description:

"In a heartwarming scene to welcome spring, one hare hops happily while a second cleans its paws and a third peeks out from behind its ear.

The motif that adorns our delightful silver Easter coin is taken from Albrech Durer's woodcut " The Holy Family with Three Hares" (circa 1497). 

The original can be seen at the Albertina Museum in Vienna, which celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2026. 

Durer's trio of hares symbolises both the Holy Trinity and fertility. Unlike his later "Feldhase" ("Young Hare"), which is essentially a descendant of the three hares, Durer's focus here is not on lifelike representation, but on a touch of interpersonal connection as the third hare places its paw on the second hare's shoulder, Warm, gentle and kind - like spring itself."

A cheerful scene: Three rabbits are having fun in the grass. True to the motto "A Dürer for all!", the motif of the coin comes from the masterful woodcut "Holy Family with the Three Hares", dated around 1497, located in the Albertina Collection in Vienna, which celebrates its 250th Anniversary in 2026.

The coin demonstrates attention to detail and brings the trio of rabbits very close to our eyes: one rabbit jumps around, a second cleans its paw completely oblivious to the world, a third peeks out from behind its ear.

In contrast to his famous Hare, 1502, a descendant of the three hares, so to speak, Dürer's focus here is not so much on fidelity to nature and exactness, but rather on a loose and light hint of "interpersonal relationships": the third hare has gently placed a paw on the shoulder of the second, quite friendly and personal – and as kind and mild as spring itself.

Why does one of the bunnies stare at us like that?

The middle rabbit looks at us steadily, he looks us straight in the eye. So the picture we are looking at looks back. The hare fixes us as if to say: Well, what are we going to do with each other now! This "trick" helps to turn a mere tangle of lines into reality.

What inspires so much about Dürer:

Albrecht Dürer the Younger, (born on 21 May 1471 in Nuremberg, passed away on 6 April 1528) in Nuremberg, was a German painter, graphic artist, mathematician and art theorist.

He is one of the outstanding representatives of the Renaissance: – For half a millennium there has been a consensus among people about his validity. 

To this day, his popularity is unbroken, and this will continue to be the case in the future. 

But why is that? It is known that Dürer conducted extensive studies on his subjects, in this case on the behaviour of these cute animals. 

Dürer made every effort to go beyond the mere depiction of three rabbits. He wanted to immerse himself as deeply as possible in life; and this irresistible longing is probably one of many good reasons why Dürer touches people so much.

The Coin:

The Reverse of the Five Euro Silver Coin shows three hares in the centre. They are framed by various grasses and flowers. The motif depicts a small excerpt from the woodcut "The Holy Family with the Three Hares", around 1497, which was adapted for the coin (for example, the hopping hare was moved closer to the other two).

To the right of the hares is the monogram of Albrecht Dürer: Under the roof of the A is a D with a double vertical.

The Obverse of the Five Euro Silver Coin depicts the nine National Coats of Arms, arranged in a circle on the nine-sided coin.

The peripheral inscriptions read - "REPUBLIK OSTERREICH. EURO". The inscription in the centre depicts the denomination of the Coin "5".

The trio of hares: not to be confused with Dürer's famous brown hare, which was minted on coins in 2016.
