2025 Native American "Costanoan Tribe" (also known as "Ohlone") 6-pc Set BU: Paying Tribute To Ohlone Culture And History:
The "Costanoan Tribe", (also known as the "Ohlone"), is a group of Native American peoples originally inhabiting the central California coast, from the San Francisco Bay area to Point Sur.
They traditionally lived in independently organised villages and spoke dialects of the Penutian language family.
The name "Costanoan" was given by Spanish colonists, meaning "coast" in Spanish, and they faced significant changes due to Spanish missions established in their territory between 1770 and 1797.
The Costanoan, or Ohlone, people are not yet federally recognised as a single tribe, though several Ohlone/Costanoan groups continue seeking recognition.
Some, like the Costanoan Rumsen Carmel Tribe, hold state and local recognition and are working with the Bureau of Indian Affairs on petitions.
Named “Costanoan” (“coastal people”) by Spanish explorers, their tribal population declined drastically after 1769 as Spanish missions sought to Christianize them.
Their population continued to suffer after California joined the Union due to several genocidal massacres that occurred between 1846 and 1873.
During that time, U.S. soldiers and settlers killed an estimated 9,500 to 16,000 Indigenous people.
Today, Ohlone descendants continue to preserve their culture and advocate for recognition.
Today, the "Costanoan Rumsen Carmel Tribe" continues to preserve their culture and heritage through various projects and initiatives.
