4515) The Battle of New Orleans (1812-15) was fought between the British and American Troops is regarded as the the final battle against the British, although the American War of Independence had ended much earlier: A Silver Medal:
The Battle of New Orleans was fought on January 8, 1815,
between the British Army under Major General Sir Edward Pakenham and the United
States Army under Brevet Major General Andrew Jackson, roughly 5 miles (8 km)
southeast of the French Quarter of New Orleans, in the current suburb of
Chalmette, Louisiana.
(A "brevet major general" is an
honorary or temporary promotion to the rank of major general, awarded for
gallantry or meritorious service, but without the full authority, pay, or
command responsibilities of that rank.
It was widely used in the 18th and 19th
centuries, especially during the American Civil War, to recognise officers when
permanent promotions were limited).
The battle was the climax of the five-month Gulf Campaign
(September 1814 to February 1815) by Britain to try to take New Orleans, West
Florida, and possibly the Louisiana Territory which began at the First Battle
of Fort Bowyer.
Britain started the New Orleans campaign on December 14,
1814, at the Battle of Lake Borgne and numerous skirmishes and artillery duels
happened in the weeks leading up to the final battle.
The battle took place 15 days after the signing of
the Treaty of Ghent, which formally ended the War of 1812, on December
24, 1814, though it would not be ratified by the United States (and therefore
did not take effect) until February 16, 1815, as news of the agreement had not
yet reached the United States from Europe.
Despite a British advantage in numbers, training, and
experience, the American forces defeated a poorly executed assault in slightly
more than 30 minutes. The Americans suffered 71 casualties, while the British
suffered over 2,000, including the deaths of Pakenham and his
second-in-command, Major General Samuel Gibbs.
The Battle of New Orleans (January 1815) was not part of
the American War of Independence. It was actually the final major battle of the
War of 1812, fought between the United States and Britain.
The Distinction:
American War of Independence (1775–1783): Ended with the Treaty of Paris in
1783:
The last major battle was the Siege of Yorktown (1781), where British
General Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington.
War of 1812 (1812–1815): Sometimes called America’s
“second war of independence,” since it was again fought against Britain over
trade restrictions, impressment of sailors, and territorial disputes.
The Battle of New Orleans was fought after the Treaty of Ghent had already been signed (December 1814), but news hadn’t yet reached the combatants
So, the Battle of New Orleans was the last big clash with
Britain in the War of 1812, but the Revolutionary War had ended decades
earlier.
The Battle of New Orleans: Song by: Johnny Horton:
In 1814, we took a little trip
Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip'
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans
And we caught the bloody British in the town of New
Orleans
We fired our guns and the British kept a-comin'
There wasn't as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they began to runnin'
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico
We looked down a river
And we see'd the British come
And there must have been a hundred of 'em
Beatin' on the drums
They stepped so high and they made their bugles ring
We stood beside our cotton bales and didn't say a thing
We fired our guns and the British kept a-comin'
There wasn't as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they began to runnin'
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico
Old Hickory said we could take 'em by surprise
If we didn't fire our muskets
'Til we looked 'em in the eye
We held our fire
'Til we see'd their faces well
Then we opened up our squirrel guns
And really gave 'em, well
We fired our guns and the British kept a-comin'
There wasn't as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they begin to runnin'
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico
Yeah, they ran through the briars
And they ran through the brambles
And they ran through the bushes
Where a rabbit couldn't go
They ran so fast
That the hounds couldn't catch 'em
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico
We fired our cannon 'til the barrel melted down
So we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round
We filled his head with cannon balls, and powdered his
behind
And when we touched the powder off the gator lost his
mind
We fired our guns and the British kept a-comin'
There wasn't as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they began to runnin'
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico
Yeah, they ran through the briars
And they ran through the brambles
And they ran through the bushes
Where a rabbit couldn't go
They ran so fast
That the hounds couldn't catch 'em
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico
Hut-two-three-four
Sound off, three-four
Hut-two-three-four
Sound off, three-four
Songwriters: James Morris.
