Steampunk Coin Series:

The Punk Universe Banknote/Voucher Series:

Cyberpunk is a subgenre of science fiction that blends advanced technology with dystopian, decayed societies, often described as “high tech, low life.”

It explores themes of artificial intelligence, cybernetics, and megacorporations dominating a collapsing social order.

It is marked by futuristic tech (AI, cyberware, hacking) alongside societal decay.

Its style resonates with - Neon-lit cities, cybernetic enhancements, hackers, and oppressive corporations.

Cyber-punk Origins & Influences:

1960s–70s New Wave Sci-Fi: Writers like Philip K. Dick, J.G. Ballard, and Harlan Ellison explored technology’s impact on society.

In 1984 William Gibson’s Neuromancer solidified cyberpunk, drawing from punk subculture and hacker culture.

Comics: Judge Dredd (1977) introduced cyberpunk themes in British comics.

Japanese Cyberpunk: Began with Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira (1982 manga, 1988 anime), which popularized the genre globally.

Iconic Cyberpunk Media:

Films: Blade Runner (1982), Robocop (1987), Total Recall (1990), The Matrix trilogy (1999–2003), Blade Runner 2049 (2017).

TV: Max Headroom (1987), considered the first cyberpunk TV series.

Anime/Manga: Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Battle Angel Alita, The Darwin Incident.

Recent Works: Altered Carbon (Netflix, 2018), Alita: Battle Angel (2019), Tron: Legacy (2010), Tron: Ares (2025), The Darwin Incident (2026).

Cyberpunk in Gaming:

Tabletop RPGs: Mike Pondsmith’s Cyberpunk 2013 (1988), Cyberpunk 2020 (1990), and Cyberpunk RED (2019).

Video Games: Cyberpunk 2077 (2020), developed by CD Projekt Red, set in Night City—a dystopian metropolis dominated by corporations and cybernetic culture.

Related Subgenres:

Biopunk: Focuses on genetic engineering.

Solarpunk: Imagines optimistic futures with sustainable technology.

Steampunk: Retro-futurism with steam-powered tech.

Cyberpunk isn’t just about neon lights and cybernetic implants - it is a critique of unchecked technological growth, corporate dominance, and social inequality. It remains one of the most influential sci-fi genres, shaping literature, film, anime, and gaming worldwide.

The Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de (los) Muertos)

The Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de (los) Muertos) is a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2, though other days, such as October 31 or November 6, may be included depending on the locality.

The multi-day holiday involves family and friends gathering to pay respects and remember friends and family members who have passed away.

On this day - Prayer and remembrance of friends and family members who have passed.

It is conducted by creation of home altars to remember the dead, traditional dishes for the Day of the Dead.

These celebrations can take a humorous tone, as celebrants remember amusing events and anecdotes about the departed.

It is widely observed in Mexico, where it largely developed, and is also observed in other places, especially by people of Mexican heritage.

There arIndigenous Mexican or ancient Aztec influences that account for the custom; the "Day of the Dead" has become a way to remember those forebears of Mexican culture. The Day of the Dead is largely seen as having a festive characteristic.

Traditions connected with the holiday include honouring the deceased using calaveras and marigold flowers known as cempazúchitl, building home altars called ofrendas with the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these items as gifts for the deceased.

The Remembrance is not solely focussed on the dead, as it is also common to give gifts to friends such as candy sugar skulls, to share traditional pan de muerto with family and friends, and to write light-hearted and often irreverent verses in the form of mock epitaphs dedicated to living friends and acquaintances, a literary form known as calaveras literarias.

Origins, history, and similarities to other festivities:

The festivity has become a national symbol in recent decades and it is taught in the nation's school system asserting a native origin.

In 2008, the tradition was inscribed in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

The Day of the Dead seems to have originated in both Indigenous Mesoamerican beliefs and Spanish Catholic traditions.

Pre-Columbian civilisation, including the Aztecs, engaged in rituals like honouring the deceased, which later became associated with Catholic observance including All Saint’s Day and All Soul’s Day and All Hallows Day during the period of colonisation.

The Remembrance combines different aspects such as historical elements, cultural, and adding religious elements.

Related Remembrance Day Celebrations - All Hallows Eve:

The word "Hallowe'en" is derived from a Scottish term for "All Hallow's Eve" (meaning the "Evening before All Hallows Day").

Samhain marks the Celtic New Year and the beginning of the agricultural year, which was/is celebrated with great fervour.

In ancient times, all the fires of Ireland were extinguished and relighted from one kindled upon the hill of Tlachtga. The festival is a long-surviving one - not only it has recognisably survived as a popular folk custom within the Celtic world, it has spread to the USA as 'Trick or Treat' and boosted the festival to a commercial pitch.

The Celtic festival was also adopted as the basis for the Christian festival of 'All Souls Day'St. Odilio of Cluny adopted it in 998 and this usage spread to the rest of the Western Christian world.

Now many countries observe this practice, for instance, in Mexico it the called "Dia de los Muertos" (or the "Day of the Dead"), where people visit family graves to bring offerings, candles and songs and to give family news to the departed.

For my post on "Dia De Los Muertos" rounds, please visit the following link on this blog: Did You Know series (41): Dia De Los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) themed round issues - 31.10.2017

There are traditions that certain kinds of knowledge are available at the time of Samhain, the night on which the "faery mounds" stand wide open and when the 'Sidhe' (faery folk) come forth.

Adopted into Christianity, the "Samhain vigil" found its way into the custom of "Church Porch Watch".

Keeping vigil for the dead is still observed in folk customs throughout Britain and Ireland on Hallowe'en - candles are lit in windows to light the way to departed souls (or to ward off malignant ones) and (disguisers in masks and costumes) join the mayhem and mischief pf the night

On "All Souls Day" (2nd November), the soulers of Chesire and Shropshire still circulate the countryside on their hobby-horse - the original 'nightmare' - which bears away the dead upon her back, and the old custom of soul-caking - giving a spiced cake in payment for prayers for the dead, recalls the ancient honour once shown to the ancestors.

Celebrations of Hallowe'en have over time acquired a variety of symbols and traditions. The custom of "trick-or-treat" has become customary for children dressed in scary costumes visiting house after house asking for treats (like candy or sometimes money). The word "trick" simply implies a threat to perform a light-hearted mischief on house-owners or on their property, if no treat is given.

- All over the British Isles, turnips were traditionally carved during Hallowe'en. Migrants from Ireland and Scotland to the USA, brought with them the festival of Hallowe'en. The more popular version of this tradition today, is carving pumpkins (which is much softer & easier to carve) into "jack-o-lanterns".

The essential part of the whole festival/holiday (which is traditionally celebrated on 31st October) every year,  is the ability to scare friends, family and neighbours in some of the most elaborate costumes, or even the simplest ones, with the most common one being that of a 'ghost'. Over time, ghosts have been portrayed as either 'frightening or friendly', but for the most part, they remain essential in Hallowe'en symbolism.
