The Header/Banner showcases the Obverse and Reverse of the Gold-gilded Silver Proof Coins against a background representation of Indiana Jones on one of his missions dressed in Arabic attire.
The Government and Treasury of Niue have brought out gold-gilded Matte Proof coins featuring a design of one of the most well-known movie artefacts from the blockbuster motion picture series - Indiana Jones.
Indiana Jones is an American media franchise based on the adventures of Dr. Henry Walton "Indiana" Jones, Jr., a fictional professor of archaeology, that began in 1981 with the film Raiders of the Lost Ark.
In 1984, a prequel - "The Temple of Doom", was released, and in 1989, a sequel - "The Last Crusade". A fourth film followed in 2008, titled - "The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull".
A fifth and final film, titled - "The Dial of Destiny", premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on 18.05.2023, and is scheduled to be released on 30.06.2023.
The series was created by George Lucas and stars Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. The first four films were directed by Steven Spielberg, who worked closely with Lucas during their production.
In 1992, the franchise expanded to a television series with "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles", portraying the character in his childhood and youth, and including adventures with his parents.
Marvel Comics began publishing "The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones" in 1983, and "Dark Horse Comics" gained the comic book rights to the character in 1991.
Novelisations of the films have been published, as well as many novels with original adventures, including a series of German novels by Wolfgang Hohlbein, twelve novels set before the films published by Bantam Books, and a series set during the character's childhood inspired by the television show.
Numerous Indiana Jones video games have been released since 1982.
The Coins:
The coins have been minted by the New Zealand Mint at their facilities in Auckland, on behalf of Niue Island.
The design of the coin is based on the actual medallion featured in the first instalment, Raiders of the Lost Ark.
On the Obverse of the $2 (Two Dollars) Silver Matte Proof Gold-gilded Coin is featured a symbolic image of a falcon in the centre symbolising the Egyptian God Ra.
As with the original design, a red faceted stone has been added to the head of the falcon.
The design replicates the inscription written in Paleo-Hebrew lettering and placed around the falcon.
On the Reverse of the $2 (Two Dollars) Silver Matte Proof Gold-gilded Coin, is included the remainder of the inscription which enabled Indiana Jones to replicate the staff placed around the edge.
Also inscribed in the lower half of the Coin is the denomination of the Coin - "TWO DOLLARS" and the year of issue - "2023", along with the specifications of the coin, "1 oz .999 Fine Silver".
The crest of Niue Island is placed in between the denomination and specifications.
The specifications of the Silver Coin are:
Country: Niue Island; Denomination: $2 (Two Dollars); Metal Composition: .999 Fineness Silver (Ag); Weight: 1.00 Oz or 31.1 grams; Diameter/Size: 40.00 mm; Coin Quality: Gold Gilded Matte Finish; Mintage: 1,981 pieces; Mint: New Zealand Mint on behalf of the Govt. and Treasury of Niue Island; Date/Year: 2023.
- Each coin is encapsulated and enclosed in a custom case with a magnetic closure, which also acts as the Certificate of Authenticity (COA), as the specifications are included on the inside binder.
- Two further coins are planned for release later this year, a coin replicating the fertility god featured in "The Temple of Doom" in 1984, and another coin featuring a "movie poster" from the series will also be announced in due course.
