3966) "Britannia", United Kingdom: The Annual Silver Bullion Proof & Uncirculated Coins Series brought out by the Royal Mint, UK: Date of issue: 10.11.2023:
Britannia, that ancient warrior queen who defended Great Britain’s shores from invasion and oppression, is back courtesy of the Royal Mint’s annual Britannia Silver Bullion Coins.
The gorgeous Silver bullion coin comes in a variety of weights and denominations.
The Iconic Symbol Of Britain:
The embodiment of a nation and icon of maritime sovereignty, Britannia has symbolised Britain for centuries, appearing on coins dating all the way back to the Roman Empire. More recently, her name and image have graced the United Kingdom's Britannia bullion coin series since 1987.
Philip Nathan’s design of Britannia standing unwaveringly on a wind-swept shore, trident in one hand with branch and shield in the other, won “Coin of the Year” honours for its debut.
From 1969 until 2008, a graceful rendition of Britannia was seen on 50 Pence coins and more recently, she has made a somewhat stylised appearance on the Reverse of definitive two-pound coins from 2015.
The 2023 Britannia Coins:
Now, the Silver Britannia has returned for 2023 and features an effigy of King Charles III for the first time.
Each coin in this offer was struck by the artisans of the Royal Mint and comes in gleaming Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition, meaning that the coin will be as sharp and crisp as the day it left the mint with superb details and beautiful, lustrous finishes.
Key Features:
These Britannia 2023 bullion coin featuring the first effigy of King Charles III has been released in addition to the Britannia Coin of Queen Elizabeth II.
Enhanced with four advanced security features:
A latent image changes from a padlock to Britannia’s
famous trident.
Surface animation brings the background of waves to life.
The micro-text provides both decoration and protection.
Britannia’s shield bears the Union flag, which is
accented with tincture lines.
Encapsulated in a single coin capsule.
In 2023, Britannia, the
symbol of Britain, continues to lead the way in defining security in the
bullion market.
This latest evolution of the icon combines Philip
Nathan’s acclaimed interpretation with these four groundbreaking security features to
create the most visually secure bullion coin in the world.
These additions both decorate and protect the coin, just
as the micro-text that borders the design states – ‘Decus et Tutamen’, (which
translates as ‘An ornament and a safeguard’).
In the lower left-hand of the design, below Britannia’s flowing gown, is a trident to represent her naval history.
As the viewer changes their perspective this trident becomes a padlock, emphasising the coin’s secure nature.
Surface animation behind Britannia reflects the movement
of waves and fine details such as the Union flag on Britannia’s shield have
been highlighted by tincture lines.
This one ounce silver coin includes four security features as does the one kilo silver coin.
These features are also available on the various gold editions of the coin.
