The term Silkpunk describes a genre of science fiction and fantasy that draws inspiration from ancient East Asia.
It focusses on technologies and devices made of natural materials, of historical importance to the inhabitants of East Asia and the Pacific Islands, such as bamboo, shells, coral, paper or silk.
This trend is based on bionics - the science of imitating the behavior and functioning of nature, and its goal is to construct better machines or materials by using solutions created by nature over millions of years of evolution.
Since the advent of the cyberpunk genre, a number of derivatives of cyberpunk have mushroomed in their own right as distinct subgenres in speculative fiction, especially in science fiction.
Rather than necessarily sharing the digitally and mechanically focused setting of cyberpunk, these derivatives can display other futuristic, or even retro-futuristic, qualities that are drawn from or analogous to cyberpunk - a world built on one particular technology that is extrapolated to a highly sophisticated level (this may even be a fantastical or anachronistic technology, akin to retrofuturism), a gritty transreal urban style, or a particular approach to social themes.
Steampunk, one of the most well-known of these subgenres, has been defined as a "kind of technological fantasy" others in this category sometimes also incorporate aspects of science fantasy and historical fantasy.
Bruce Bethke coined the term "cyberpunk" in his 1980 short story of the same name, proposing it as a label for a new generation of 'punk' teenagers inspired by the perceptions inherent to the Information Age.
Ken Liu an author of science fiction and fantasy has written an epic fantasy novel series titled - "The Dandelion Dynasty", in which Silkpunk has been described in the series in 2015.
Similar to its cousins, cyberpunk, steampunk, and solarpunk - Silkpunk represents a mix of two equally important elements -
- "Silk" - an aesthetic style inspired by Asian-Pacific mythology, history, and culture
- and a "Punk-like tendency to question, deconstruct, and rebel". Cyberpunk, born out of the turmoil of the technology boom in the 1970s, critiques the hegemony of tech tycoons and social inequalities.
Silkpunk seeks to excavate the buried roots of tradition and exorcise the ghosts of colonialism from the Asia-Pacific region.
The result is a kaleidoscope of vibrant, varicoloured myths - a reimagination of the past with the potential to rewrite the future of sci-fi and fantasy.

The Obverse of the $5 (Five Dollars) Silver Antique Finish Coloured Coin features an effigy of Late Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions on the lower periphery read - “ELIZABETH II”, “NIUE” (the issuing country name), “2022” (the year of issue), “5 DOLLARS” and "Ag 999".
The design also refers to silkpunk and shows mechanical dragons.
