4077) "Bicentenary Anniversary of Independence" - (1825-2025), Bolivia: Gold and Silver Proof Medals mark the milestone celebrations: Date/Year of Coins issue: 2025:
1) Bolivar Soberano (or "Sovereign Bolivar"), Venezuela: (2018 Series of Banknotes) introduced by Banco de National, the Central Bank of Venezuela on 20.08.2018
The official name of "Bolivia" is the "Plurinational State
of Bolivia". It is also known as "Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia" in Spanish,
which translates to "Plurinational State of Bolivia". The country's
name honors the revolutionary leader Simon Bolivar.
The Banco Central de Bolivia release commemorative medals
in celebration of the Bicentennial.
On the Neader/Banner the city of Sucre's historic Casa de la Libertad building
features on the obverse side.
Present day Bolivia’s post-Columbian history began with
the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire in 1524 and was mostly completed by
1533.
The territory now called Bolivia was known as "Charcas" and under the
authority of Spain.
By the late 16th century, Bolivia became an important
source of revenue for the Spanish Empire with the extensive mining of silver
for nearly two hundred years.
However, Spanish royal authority weakened during
the Napoleonic Wars of the early 19th century, and sentiment against colonial
rule grew.
Calls for independence began in the city of Sucre on the 25th May
1809 and the "Chuquisaca Revolution" became known as the first demonstration for
independence in Latin America.
The same year, Spanish authorities in the
Viceroyalty of the Rio de La Plata – present-day Argentina, sent soldiers to
retain the territory under the name of King Ferdinand VII, previously deposed
by Napoleon but the following year the Spanish American wars of independence
were raging across the continent.
The province was captured and recaptured many times
during the war by the royalists and patriots but, Buenos Aires sent three
military campaigns, all of which were defeated.
Charcas was finally freed of
Royalist dominion by Marshal Antonio José de Sucre, with a military campaign
coming from the North in support of the campaign headed by Simón Bolívar, known
as "el Libertador".
After 16 years of war the Republic was proclaimed on the 6th
August 1825 at the Casa de la Libertad, today regarded as Bolivia’s most important
historic monument and landmark in the city of Sucre.
Bolivia was named in honour of Simón Bolívar, the
Venezuelan leader who led the Spanish American wars of independence.
The
then-leader of Venezuela, Antonio José de Sucre, had been given the option by
Bolívar to either unify Charcas - present-day Bolivia with the newly formed
Republic of Peru, to unify with all the United Provinces of the Río de la
Plata, or to formally declare its independence from Spain as a wholly
independent nation.
Sucre chose the third option and on the 6th August 1825,
and with local support he named the new country in honour of Simón Bolívar.
Initially, the proposed name was to be the "Republic of Bolívar".
But some days
later, Congressman Manuel Martín Cruz suggested ‘Bolivia’ which approved by
parliamentary representatives on the 3rd October 1825.
Bolivia underwent
another recent and official name change in 2009 when the new constitution
changed the country's name to the "Plurinational State of Bolivia" to reflect the
rights of Bolivia's indigenous peoples under the new constitution.
Today,
Bolivia encompasses 424,164 square miles of territory and is home to 11.3
million people.
The boliviano currency, divided into 100 centavos was
introduced in 1864. It was replaced by the Peso Boliviano in 1963 and reverted
back to the Boliviano in 1986.
The Commemorative Coins:
The Obverse is shared on both Gold and Silver medals
and features a true-to-life and colour image (silver versions) of the historic "Casa de la Libertad", with the legend "200 AÑOS" placed above the building and "CASA DE LA LIBERTAD" placed just below.
Along the periphery above and encircling the
primary design is the commemorative text - "BICENTENARIO DE LA INDEPENDENCIA DE
BOLIVIA 1825 – 2025".
The Reverse design is shared on both the Gold and Silver
medals and bears the National Coat of Arms of Bolivia centred.
Above and along
the upper periphery is the legend and current name of the country "ESTADO PLURINACIÓN
DE BOLIVIA".
Below the crest is an image of the commemorative logo celebrating
the Bicentennial of Bolivia.
The specifications of this Coin are:
