About 2026 Manuka Beetle 2oz Silver Proof & Colour Coin:

Aotearoa New Zealand is known to be home to more than 5,000 beetle species, most of which are endemic. It is estimated that the real number of local beetle species could be up to 10,000. 

The Mānuka Beetle (Pyronota festiva), known by Māori as kerewai, is an endemic scarab beetle. 

It is closely related to other beetles in the Scarabaeidae family that are found in other parts of the world.

This insect is common and widespread across New Zealand. Between 3.00 mm and 25.00 mm in length, its wings are a vibrant, glossy green with subtle areas of blue and yellow. 

The Māori used them in traditional medicines to reduce fevers and stomach aches. 

The Victorians were attached to the bright metallic green colour and used Mānuka beetles in jewellery.

Curiously, these beetles were first seen in London from the middle of the 19th century as they were found in raw sheep's wool imported from New Zealand.

Common and widespread across New Zealand, there is no compelling evidence to suggest they found elsewhere in the world.

Inspired by rectangular specimen displays, this Silver Proof & Colour Coin features a high-relief mānuka beetle finished with iridescent colour. 

The mirrored proof background complements the realistic, life-size rendering of the beetle. 

Below, the coin features beetle’s common name, and scientific name - "Pyronota festiva". The obverse features the effigy of Charles III.

This coin issue celebrates the beauty of the endemic mānuka beetle.

The rectangular Silver Proof and colour coins have been minted by the BH Mayer’s Kunstprägeanstalt (Mint) GmbH at their facilities in Baden-Württemberg on behalf of the Reserve Bank. 

Designed by the Fuller Design Firm of Wellington, New Zealand, the Reverse of the $1 (One Dollar) Proof and Colour Coin features the image of a high-relief mānuka beetle finished with iridescent colour applied to the surface. 

The mirrored proof background complements the realistic, life-size rendering of the beetle. 

The coin’s denomination "$1" is shown near the upper right corner. 

Below the primary design is the text "MĀNUKA BEETLE" along with its scientific name "Pyronota Festiva". 

The Obverse of the $1 (One Dollar) Proof and Colour Coin  depicts an effigy of Charles III, along with the legend "CHARLES III · 2026 · NEW ZEALAND". Below the effigy are the coin’s specifications ".999 Ag 2 oz".
