The Finnish Ministry of Finance has brought out Silver Proof Coins depicting the eminent Sociologist Erik Allardt.

The Reverse of the features a quadrilateral design that resonates within the world of sociology.

There are few people who have made such an indelible impression on society during their lifetime.

One of them is Erik Allardt, one of the most famous and important social scientists in Finland and one of the most well-known and internationally distinguished Nordic sociologists.

Allardt was born in 1925 – one hundred years ago, and grew up in Helsinki.

After World War II, Allardt, now twenty years old went to study at the University of Helsinki.

Over time, Allardt served as professor of sociology at his Alma Mater between 1955 and 1991, and as chancellor of Åbo Akademi University between 1992 and 1994.

His thesis on the influence of different normative backgrounds on the prevalence of divorce in 1952 laid the foundation for the breakthrough of modern sociology in Finland.

Allardt’s extensive work was mostly focussed on the following subjects such as the structure of society and its changes and consequences, political radicalism, welfare and the impact it has on linguistic minorities.

In all, Allardt published 20 books and more than 600 scientific articles during his lifetime.

Another remarkable fact is that Erik Allardt’s time as a professor coincided with the baby boomers at Finnish universities and the growth of social sciences.

As a consequence, sociology became a popular subject and Allardt went on to instruct and educate around 1500 students.

He went on to educate entire generations of Finnish students, who later reached influential positions in society.

His influence has continued both within and outside Finland with much of his research and dissertations still providing the basis for current trends and socio-behavioural patterns in many countries.

Awards & Recognition:

- In 1995, Allardt has been awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of the Lion of Finland, the country’s civilian and military order, awarded to distinguished soldiers and civilians.

- Allardt was awarded the Society for the Study of Ethnic Relations and International Migration Award of Recognition in 2004 for his significant work on issues of ethnic relations and international migration.

On the 25th August 2020, Erik Allardt passed away in Helsinki at the age of 95.

The 20 Euro Silver Proof Coins have been minted by the Royal Dutch Mint (RDM) at their facilities in Houten, Netherlands, under license as The Helsinki Mint and designed by Petri Neuvonen.

The Reverse of the 20 Euro Silver Proof Coin features a unique quadrilateral design that resonates within the world of sociology and social science research which aligns perfectly with the work of Erik Allardt.

The various shapes converge at the top right with the commemorative text "ERIK ALLARDT 1925 2020" placed to the left in the largest surface area.

The Obverse side illustrates the supra-individual structures of society, in which individuals are part of groups of people.

The abstract motif features various surface textures and reliefs, which emphasize the simplified formal language and conceptual approach.

In a circular direction and from the left is the text "SUOMI FINLAND 2025" along with the denomination 20€ which is placed to the lower right.
