4575) "Utopiec" - Slavic Beasts, Republic of Cameroon: two Coin Variants - 1000 Francs CFA and 2000 Francs CFA (Silver Coins) issued by the Mint of Gdansk, Poland: Date/Year of Coin issue: 26.07.2026:
Slavic Beasts Coin Series:
Utopiec (plural Utopce), Vodník or Topnik:
Utopiec is a name applied to Slavic spirits of water. The utopce are spirits of human souls that died drowning, residing in the element of their own demise.
They are responsible for sucking people into swamps and lakes as well as killing the animals standing near the still waters.
Folklore:
Slavonic water spirits of the drowned dead remained a popular element of rural Polish folklore at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, as shown by Władysław Reymont in his Nobel Prize-winning novel Chłopi (The Peasants).
Its story takes place during the 1880s in Congress Poland and follows the everyday life of the peasantry in a typical Polish village.
In the tenth chapter of book two, some of the characters gather together to exchange stories and legends, in one of which the topielica (feminine form of topielec) is mentioned.
A more recent example of the utopiec in Polish popular culture is the comic book series Lil and Put, where the two titular characters are constantly at odds with an Utopiec living in a pond next to their village. He is never directly seen and possesses magical powers.
"Utopiec" is the official Polish translation of the "Drowned", a monster and hostile entity from the video game Minecraft.
The Coin:
The Reverse and Obverse of the 1000 CFA Franc Coin
- The Drowning Man is the fourth installment of the Slavic Beasts series, presenting the most intriguing creatures of Slavic mythology. Thanks to its refined design, high-quality workmanship and wealth of details, the coin is a unique proposition for both collectors and lovers of old legends.
- As its predecessors, the Utopiec BU coin is a premium silver bullion issue from the Slavic Beasts series, made of pure Ag 999 sterling silver.
- It is available in two weight variants – 1 oz mintage 1000 pcs) and 2 oz (mintage 2000 pcs). The numismatic coin impresses with its richness of details and composition inspired by Slavic mythology.
The Reverses of the two Coin Variants - 1000 Francs CFA and 2000 Francs CFA shows the Drowned One – a water demon known from Slavic beliefs.
The figure emerges from the swampy vegetation and wooden structure, and her emaciated silhouette, long hands and fish tail give the composition a dark and unsettling character.
The scene is complemented by numerous details, in a water lily, a dragonfly, a frog, an old wagon wheel and dense reeds, creating a suggestive landscape of wetlands. At the bottom there are inscriptions "DROWNING" and "SLAVIC BESTIARY".
The Obverses of the two Coin Variants - 1000 Francs CFA and 2000 Francs CFA depicts the official markings of the issuer – the "Republic of Cameroon".
The Emblem/Seal of the Republic of Cameroon in in the centre.
In the central part there is the state coat of arms, surrounded by the denomination, the designation of the silver fineness and the year of issue.
The background is created by an intricate plant composition, in which numerous motifs are hidden, such as owls, a bat, a writhing snake and a spider web, emphasising the mysterious character of the entire series.
